More and more that science discovers the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids essential to health and development of the fetus, infant and child, we will see a continuation the recent trend of DHA supplementation of food. Now you can buy infant formula with DHA and a range of other foods for infants supplemented with DHA as baby cereal with DHA.

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is the most important omega-3 fatty acids now known to be so important to our health. Together with EPA DHA is essential for many aspects of our brain and heart health and is being established that an adequate supply of fetal growth and infant after birth is essential for optimal child development.

But it is another matter to decide whether the infant formula with DHA using is a good idea or not. However, A recent event gives us a clue. This was a lecture by a representative of a manufacturer of baby food that are making a new infant formula containing DHA. The conference included some interesting information, particularly the residents of the U.S. and Canada have some of the lowest levels of omega-3 fats of any country in the world. This is due to our low level of fish consumption.

Also of interest was the statement that provides benefits to infants and babies with a adequate supply of Omega 3 fats include better cognitive development, visual acuity improved, retention of memory and the ability to communicate and solve problems; and psychomotor development. "That statement you can see the importance of having an adequate supply of Omega 3 essential fatty acids available for fetus and infant.

However, there is another powerful reason to be skeptical about the benefits of infant formula with DHA. For a wide range of reasons breastfeeding is much better for the health of the developing baby using infant formula. If the source of maternal docosahexaenoic acid is adequate, then become available to the baby through her milk. If the mother has enough DHA then the baby will also have enough.

Of course, this depends on an adequate supply of Omega 3 fatty acids to the mother through their diet.

This is currently not clear what benefit there is the use of DHA in infant formula. And indeed, the representative of the infant formula company said that "No infant formula can never replace breast milk. The take years before anyone can tell us how to add hormones in breast milk to infant formula.

So I think it is too early to conclude that we should all be feeding baby formula with DHA to our babies. Unless a compelling reason to avoid breastfeeding our babies have an adequate supply of DHA in breast milk, provided the mother has an adequate supply.

Of course it is always possible to obtain an adequate supply of Omega 3 fats in our diet to increase the amount of fish oil we eat. However, the fish is very expensive and is generally recognized as being contaminated with a variety of pollutants such as mercury.

Do you have to give your baby infant vitamins?

My doctor told me that since I give exclusively breastfeed my newborn baby vitamin drops. I gave him a little at first, and apparently they do because of illness (diarrhea, fever). Since then, nothing left to give only breast milk. Is that correct? He is 14 weeks and weighs almost 16 pounds, so it is healthy for me! Any suggestions?

I never did. I think I'm a bad mother, but I never saw the point. If you are eating a healthy diet, plenty of calories and drinking plenty of water, your baby is getting what it needs. I am not a doctor - like me, you can decide for yourself and your baby.
