How much does a newborn rely cost?

Ive heard wild things from a LOT of my girlfriends, and they vary wildly from cheaper than I pay to take care of my cats, to more money than I make! How much does a newborn rely cost? (38 weeks along and live in the US by the way, AZ)

ps. Please don't be rude or anything. I'm married and have been for 6 years. We are more than stable and ready for a child. I just wanted a general idea of what to think of for the budget. I need to start thinking about a school fund and everything else. This is going to off balance what we have been doing for years now and I just want a kinda general idea.

There is a difference between what they cost and what is required. If you buy them every toy made and tons of cute outfits obviously they can cost A LOT. However, in reality, babies don't need much. Formula is pretty expensive, but breastfeeding is "free" and much better for the child anyway. Many of my friends bathe their babies every day, but in reality once or twice a week is more than enough. More can actually be harmful to their skin. You wash their but everytime you change their diaper anyway and they don't move for the first 3 or 4 months so how dirty can they really get???

As for clothes, my rule was if they didn't poop/spit up on it or spill something on it then it didn't need to be washed. Again, they don't sweat or move so how else can it be dirty? I kept my kids in onesies until about 4 to 6 months bc it is just easier and more comfortable for them. A nice outfit with tights and headband or shoes and a nice belt may be cute, but it is completely unneccesary and impractical when changing often. Also, they can sleep in the same onesy and you don't need "pajamas".

As for changing clothes, if it was clean i might keep them in it for 2 or 3 days.

The biggest expense is diapers and wipes, but if you have BJ's or costco you can buy 2 or 3 times as much for the same price as a package in the supermarket. At BJs you can get 228 size 1/2 diapers for $31 vs I don't know what in the supermarket.

Toys. For a newborn they are mostly unnecessary. They won't even care about a rattle for months. Stuffed animals are cute for guests to look at but babies could care less. The best thing was the gymboree mat. My baby lay there all the time and liked to look at the toys hanging off. When she got older she would reach for them. The toys also come off and can be taken in the car etc.

While I never added actual dollars, I do know you do not have to be even near rich to properly provide for a newborn. To me, the things noted above are not even done to save money, they just make sense.
