Mini Boden

Today I had a great time as coach. I have volunteered to help my old former high school crew rowing VIII and was working with one of young rowers to change their hand motion during the rowing stroke. His technique error was affecting the rest of the crew because it was causing a alteration in the balance of the boat. In rowing, with a stable, balanced boat is critical to the performance and physical security on the backs of the rowers.

This article answers the question "Do you know how athletes need to be a coach?" and demonstrates the application of being a coach focused on the athletes.

As background, the central philosophy of a coach focused athlete, is the desire to meet the training needs their athletes by teaching them the way they most require. To do this, coaches must know themselves and the personality of the athlete. Being an athlete-focused coach means being able to effectively perform each of the four main styles of training. These styles are in control, participation, motivation and organization. The challenge is knowing when to use each style and with that athlete. The overall goal of the athlete-centered coaching is the development of athletes who take responsibility for them themselves and their behaviors. This means that allows athletes to take ownership of their participation in sport, instead of being too often led by the coach to perform as they say.

Returning to the example earlier in this article ... My first approach to which John (not his real name) to make the change was to use a coaching style command. This means that I have explained and ordered him to make the change by creating an awareness of what their hands were making and giving the correct technique to use. However, although he could make the physical change, change does not "stick" for more than two or three shots.

Began to develop in a situation that would have had to constantly remind the correct technique. How many times can I do this? My patience will surely be exhausted. I realized my coaching style was clearly not working. This is critical, because my training information and advice was exactly what the athlete is required, however, my approach and my style of communication were not working. So instead of just talking to him every time made him feel embarrassed To which he replied: "OK."

"John, remember that technical change was talking to you about of during the session? "

"Yes, I know you want to keep your hands lower in the boat on my knees."

"Exactly I do not know how to do this for you. What do you suggest we do so this change is pasted important because at the moment, his hand heights are affecting the balance the boat. So how do we get this change hands for the rest of the crew can benefit from a better balance board? I do not know what else and I say to you that maybe you'd like me to shut up. What are your ideas on how to make this change? "

"Well, Bo, I would you do not have to tell me to keep pushing your hands down. "

"Well John, this is something that we need to fix so what are your thoughts do this well, because as you can see the whole team trusts you. "

"Ok, I will focus attention on this when we started to row again and make sure that do well. "

I had no idea how John was going to do this, but never mind. All that was important was John knew how he would do. He worked out for himself and the crew began to row again, he immediately began to paddle better and saw him making the necessary change. In the interaction previously, I changed my coaching style to be participating in the training where I ask more questions to tell the answers.

After John had identified for himself how could the other hand, I myself went to a motivational coaching style that gives a positive push to reward their effort in making the change.

At the end of the session, the most gratifying was the pride of John was when he questioned the row. He made the necessary change, the team had a big scandal and I saw this made him feel good about yourself.

The bottom line is this. Every athlete knows that they need to be a coach, even if can not express to you, they do know what they need. Our role as coach is to try different styles of training and communication methods until all create the result we want. In this example, I changed my command style to a participatory style in which questions John and he came up with the answers. Finally, I changed Again, a motivational style in which I gave a positive boost and praise to reinforce their efforts in making the change.

Being able to adapt his coaching style to meet the needs of athletes is the fundamental principle of being an athlete-centered coaching. What is better about this approach, particularly when using the style involved coaching (which are more questions than answers, I say) is that the results of the athletes best when it does not matter on game day. This is because the Athletes are accustomed to think for themselves and be able to solve their own problems without entering training. The result is better performance when it matters most.
